| Village Fund Initiative (VFI) |
The Village Fund Initiative has been created within the Educational Foundation to mitigate social inclusion across the Ann Arbor Public School District. Initially funds are used to assist with inclusion factors in the elementary schools such as school pictures, yearbooks, field trip fees, ice cream social, school traditions requiring fees, and transportation to school programs in the evening. When funding permits the program will be expanded to middle and high school and other inclusion issues. |

| COMP Tutor Program |
Cooperative Outreach Music Program. The Cooperative Outreach Music Program (COMP) provides music tutors to talented, low-income, middle school students who cannot afford private instruction on their instrument. The program provides one, thirty minute, tutor assisted lesson weekly for students currently enrolled in our school’s band and orchestra classes, in grades 6 – 8. This project is a collaborative program between the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts, the Ann Arbor Public Schools, and the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation. |
 |
| Disability Awareness Workshop |
The Disability Awareness Workshops have taken place in many Ann Arbor Public Schools fourth grade classrooms for the past few years as a result of the generosity of many volunteers, both individual and from other non-profit organizations. Contributions to this fund will allow AAPS to present the program in all fourth grade classrooms at times convenient for the schools and volunteers, not at the discretion of the rental program. The Educational Foundation is pleased to be able to support the development and growth of this fund and initiative. |

| Rick Burgess Memorial Music Scholarship |
The Rick Burgess Music Scholarship Award was created in celebration of Rick Burgess who passed away on March 2, 2009. He left his mark on Ann Arbor’s culture as a jazz pianist and restaurant-club owner. Rick, a Chicago native, graduated from the University of Michigan School of Engineering in 1961, but decided to pursue other interests. His formal music education was with the great aficionado Lloyd Reese at his Conservatory in Los Angeles. Reese trained such greats as Charles Mingus, Harry Carney, Ben Webster and Art Tatum. Rick’s profound love of jazz was rooted in the creativity of each performance. He drew his greatest inspiration from the works of Bill Evans and the legendary Thelonious Monk. Jazz’s spontaneity provided the perfect medium for Rick’s creative mind. He gave each of his performances a life of its own. For decades, Rick successfully shared his passion with this community by creating a live stage for jazz musicians of any genre, including many young talents from local high school jazz programs. |

| The Karen Thomas Memorial Fund |
The Karen Thomas Memorial Fund of the AAPSEF was established by her husband, Andy, in early 2008. The Fund honors Karen’s profound love of reading, and her belief that literacy is essential to a successful and fulfilling life. The Fund will sponsor literacy and academic retention programs for children at the elementary level with an emphasis on academically at risk students. Karen loved to read, and especially loved reading aloud to children. On just about any school morning, you could find her sitting on the bench outside the office at Burns Park Elementary, reading to her son Jonathan. She never missed an opportunity to volunteer as a reader during “March is Reading Month” -- even while undergoing chemotherapy. |
