| Citizens of Ann Arbor,
Every public school district in Michigan is currently under assault by state budget cuts. Unfortunately, Ann Arbor is in no way immune to the damage. Programs such as music, arts, foreign language, sports – they are all on the immediate chopping block. That is why the proposed Washtenaw Schools Millage is so vitally important to the future of our children and our community. The proposed 2-mill increase represents less than $200 per year for the average Ann Arbor household. That relatively small amount can help maintain the strength of our nationally ranked schools, and help our children prepare for the demands of the 21st Century. In addition, it can ensure the following: Resilient home values. The strength of a school district is a major factor in maintaining/increasing home values. The Millage can help continue Ann Arbor’s reputation as one of the nation’s best places to live, work and retire. It is projected that a failure to pass the Washtenaw Schools Millage, combined with $500-$800 cuts in state funding per student, will leave Ann Arbor schools with a $12-$15 million overall deficit – just in 2010. That is the equivalent of 220 full time positions, leading to fewer programs and larger class sizes. Without passage of the Washtenaw Schools Millage, 2010 will be just the start of the long-term damage. Deeper cuts must be made again in 2011, in 2012, and well into the foreseeable future. It is simply a reality of our State and our challenging times. The good news? You have the power to minimize the damage this November, making certain Ann Arbor Schools remain strong and vibrant for our students and our community. It is with this spirit that the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation wholeheartedly endorses the Washtenaw Schools Millage. We strongly encourage you to vote “yes” to the Washtenaw Schools Millage on November 3rd. In addition, you can make certain that our schools remain innovative and excellent through helping to fund the forward-thinking programs funded by the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation. Your Millage vote plus your private donation are paramount in making certain Ann Arbor Public Schools remain innovative and excellent, now and into the future. Be part of the solution on November 3rd. Wendy Correll, Executive Director Christy Perros, Chairperson |
